The Street light Retrofitting Program was designed to light dark areas and to reduce our carbon footprint. It is called the “retrofitting” program because the main infrastructure is kept and the bulbs and the fixtures are updated. LED bulbs now dominant Antigua and Barbuda’s streetlight network. The LED bulbs are more efficient, long lasting and are more resilient to the elements.
In 2017 the project was launched and funded by the Caribbean Development Bank. APUA was given funds to purchase 14,000 street lights. The program started in downtown St. John’s then moved outwards to the more rural areas over the course of approximately two (2) years.
