Above average sea swells naturally occur from November into the first quarter of the new year. High sea swells increase turbidity (a measure of suspended particles in a sample of water.) A high level of turbidity will damage the membranes, reducing their lifespan significantly. To reduce damage to the plant due to high turbidity, the plant is run at reduced production levels or shut down completely until acceptable levels of turbidity are observed.
